The piece was catalysed by the history of a secret bar and nightclub located in the crypt of the Church of St Mary Magdalene on Munster Square. The bar became a safe space, particularly for gay men, to socialise during a time when homosexuality was illegal in the 1960s and 1970s. Through workshops with Community Champions, the Church of St Mary Magdalene, and Mosaic LGBT+ Young Person’s Trust, the piece was created to celebrate local LGBTQ+ communities and their resilience in the face of marginalisation. The pigmented bio-concrete sculptures were modelled from specific pieces of chewed gum donated by local LGBTQ+ community members, capturing their unique yet invisible DNA.
